The response of the Anglican church to growing demand was first the building of St John's in 1856, then the opening of a mission room on Stockwell Gate in 1870, which became in 1889 the centre of a new parish, St Mark's. The foundation stone of a proper church for the parish, on Nottingham Road, was laid by the Duke of Portland in 1896.
